This week, we celebrated another group of women successfully completing the Own My Life course.
Own My Life is a programme designed to help women understand domestic abuse, recognise the impact it has had on their lives, and rebuild confidence, knowledge and control over their future. Throughout the course, participants explore topics such as coercive control, healthy relationships, self-esteem, boundaries and recovery.
One of the activities we use during the course is “The Island.” Women are encouraged to think about what life can look like when someone else controls access to money, transport, communication, daily choices and support. Together, the group explores not only the practical barriers survivors face, but also the emotional impact of living with abuse. It is often a powerful reminder that abuse affects every area of a person’s life, not just the relationship itself.

Over the weeks, participants support one another, share experiences where they feel comfortable doing so, and develop a greater understanding of the tactics used by abusive partners. Just as importantly, they begin to recognise their own strengths and resilience.
Completing the course is not the end of someone’s journey, but it can be an important step towards recovery. Many women tell us that they leave with a better understanding of what happened to them, increased confidence in their decision-making and a stronger sense of self.
We would like to congratulate everyone who completed this latest Own My Life group. Taking part requires courage, honesty and commitment, and we are incredibly proud of what each participant has achieved.
