May Newsletter: Strengthening community connections.
Over the past month, Lochaber Women’s Aid has continued working across the community to raise awareness of domestic abuse, support women and children, and encourage open conversations around wellbeing and support.
Throughout May, we shared awareness content challenging common myths around domestic abuse and coercive control, including how abuse can often be misunderstood or minimised. These conversations remain an important part of helping people recognise unhealthy and controlling behaviours and understand the impact domestic abuse can have behind closed doors.
Mental Health Awareness Week also gave us an opportunity to focus on wellbeing in simple and practical ways. Alongside sharing information about accessing mental health support, staff took part in 15-minute daily wellbeing activities including yoga, walking, dancing and even making paper aeroplanes. It was a reminder that taking time to reset, connect and look after our mental health is important for everyone.
Partnership working remains a key part of the support available across Lochaber. We continue to work alongside local services, organisations and community groups to improve understanding of domestic abuse and strengthen joined-up support for women and children.
This month also highlighted the wide range of support women are accessing through our services, including support around coercive control, emotional abuse, confidence, anxiety, boundaries and understanding domestic abuse.
Every conversation, referral and support session represents someone reaching out and being heard. Raising awareness, improving understanding and building strong community connections all play an important role in helping women and children feel safer and more supported.
