International Women’s Day: Coffee, Craft and Conversation

Last week we marked International Women’s Day with a relaxed coffee and craft morning here at Lochaber Women’s Aid. We invited colleagues from Housing and RASASH to join us for a few hours of conversation, creativity and cake.

The idea was simple. Create a space where people working across different services could slow down, chat properly and spend some time together. In busy roles it is easy for meetings to become rushed and practical. Sitting around a table with scissors, paper and icing bags tends to change the tone a little.

People made collage posters, decorated cupcakes and shared ideas about what International Women’s Day means to them. Some of the posters carried simple but powerful messages like “I believe in you”, “Yes you can”, and reminders that change comes through actions, not just words.

We also asked a question on our International Women’s Day board:

How will you help forge a more inclusive world?

The answers reflected the values many of us try to bring into our work every day. Speaking up when something is wrong. Supporting women in our community. Challenging harmful stereotypes. Creating spaces where women and girls feel safe and respected.

These conversations matter. Domestic abuse services, housing teams and specialist support organisations often work alongside each other when women are navigating difficult situations. Taking time to strengthen those connections helps us respond better when support is needed.

Of course, it would not be a proper morning without coffee and cake, and the cupcake decorating quickly became its own small competition.

International Women’s Day is often about big themes and global conversations, but moments like this remind us that change also happens in quieter ways. It grows through relationships, shared values and people working together in their communities.

A huge thank you to everyone from Housing and RASASH who joined us. It was a lovely morning and a good reminder that when services come together with the same goal, women in our community are better supported.
