April Newsletter: Challenging Myths and Supporting Survivors

April was another busy month at Lochaber Women’s Aid, with continued support for women, children and young people across our communities. Our latest newsletter gives a snapshot of the work taking place behind the scenes and the conversations that matter most.

This month’s myth-busting feature looks at the common belief that if a couple are “always arguing”, the abuse must be mutual. Domestic abuse is often misunderstood as conflict between equals, when in reality it is about power, control and fear. What can look like arguing from the outside may be one person reacting to intimidation, manipulation or constant pressure. It is important to look beyond who shouted loudest and ask who feels frightened, who is walking on eggshells, and who holds the power.

April was also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual abuse can happen within relationships, including long-term partnerships and marriages, where consent is wrongly assumed rather than freely given. Consent must always be active, ongoing and can be withdrawn at any time. Abuse is never about desire; it is about power and control. Challenging these myths helps create safer communities where survivors are believed and supported.

During the month, our Women’s Service supported 63 women, while our Children and Young People’s Service supported 34 young people. Women accessed support around confidence, anxiety, boundaries, isolation and understanding abuse, including coercive control and gaslighting. These figures reflect both the impact of abuse and the strength it takes to seek support.

Our outreach work across Lochaber also continued, helping make support more visible, accessible and responsive in local communities. Strong partnerships and local links mean women and children can access the right support at the right time.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our work. Every conversation, referral and act of support helps make a difference.
